Over the past several years, there has been a rise in online gambling. As an activity that is both highly popular and often profitable, many individuals turn to bets on various sports events. The problem with this type of betting is that it can occur between two parties who are physically distant from each other. While almost any bet requires some level of trust, the issue of trust becomes magnified when Internet connections are used instead of face-to-face contact. This paper will discuss the issue of trust as it relates to online gambling.

An individual or organization offers one prop bet (the odds this bet will fluctuate given the different factors involved in the sport and whether or not an individual is betting on their “home” team). It is important to recognize that each bet has a unique set of characteristics, such as point spreads and totals. The point spread refers to how many points the expected winner should win by, while the total refers to how many points both teams can score combined.

Online sports betting requires individuals around the world to trust one another in order for wagers to be made. As with any form of gambling, there are opportunities for dishonesty. This is not to say that online gambling sites are necessarily unreliable or corrupt, but it does mean that trust issues exist in this area. There are times when individuals may never actually meet one another, which increases the difficulty of establishing trust. This can be even more problematic with Internet-based gambling because there are generally no laws prohibiting players from participating across state lines. If two individuals are located in states where sports betting is illegal, they have no way of enforcing legal action if the other person does not pay up. Betting requires an individual to rely on information he/she obtains from others without being able to directly control what goes on between them.
